Located in West Garfield Park, the Academy of Communications and Technology Charter School opened its doors to students in 1997 as an independent public school. We exist to prepare inner city students who wish to attend and complete college. Our program emphasizes the communication arts and technological literacy. ACT students live in and around West Garfield Park, a neighborhood chronically plagued with gangs, drugs, unemployment, violence and other symptoms of poverty. ACT believes that all of the school’s stakeholders - teachers, parents, students and community members - can become partners in building a safe haven for learning and growth. ACT currently serves 300 students in grades 6 – 12.

Imagine a small school, grouped by multi-ages, nestled in the prairie, with a goal to instill life long learning in all its students. Add to this a warm, caring, personal atmosphere, and the use of a variety of people for teaching: students, parents, experts in a subject, and classroom staff. Mix in the ability to use both the indoors and outdoors as one large classroom, and the integration of the underlying theme of environmental education. This is Prairie Crossing Charter School.
